How do I build a godly relationship?
There’s a Scripture passage that I personally need to hear all the time: “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6) Pride will poison any relationship, and especially your relationship to God.
We need to learn humility. First, that means acknowledging the darkness within us. Knowing a godly relationship begins with confessing that in yourself you don’t have one, don’t even want one, and couldn’t have one in your own strength. But Jesus is “the way the truth and the life.” (John 14:6) His Spirit can give you a new life. The Biblical word for this 180 is repentance. If you want to know God, every day practice repentance.
Then, it’s like any relationship. Communication is so important. Read, meditate upon God’s Word. Pray unceasingly, worship and give thanks always. Learn to love what God loves. According to the Bible, true spirituality is intertwined with morality. That means that if you want to walk close to God, you have to walk in his footsteps. In short, you have to learn to be like Jesus Christ, who lived humbly for the good of others and the glory of God.
Learn to surrender. One of the biggest temptations we face is to think that we can have God on our terms. That just doesn’t work. You must give your all, you must be clay in God’s hands. Jesus also said, “Whoever finds his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.” (Mathew 10:39)
