Luke 1:78-79 “… the rising sun will come to us from heaven to shine on those living in darkness…”
Light is a central theme of the Christian celebration of Christmas. Even as we drive around in the darkness, noting the cheery light displays, we see the light shining in the darkness. I’ve been told that some of the largest displays can even be seen from space!
In much the same way, Jesus Christ is the Light shining in our dark world. Our world has been darkened by the sins of all people, and we have no way to find our way out of the darkness independently.
This darkness is present in each one of us and is in all our hearts. Sin is in everyone and everything we do – even our generous giving at Christmastime – is tainted by this sin. Sin entered the world when our first parents, Adam and Eve, walked away from the Lord God. This destroyed our relationship with God, and left us in darkness – far away from Him. Thankfully, God Himself has provided a way out of this darkness!
God, our Heavenly Father, sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to earth as a baby in Bethlehem. Jesus visits the earth in order to restore the relationship between God and humanity. By visiting the earth through His own Son, God shows his tender mercy, and love for His people. God saw the darkness in our world, and in his great love, He sent his Son to be the Light, showing the way out of the darkness.
That is the reason why we celebrate the birth of our Saviour, Jesus Christ. Just as the Christmas lights shine on in the dark, cold, dreary winter nights, and provide light, Jesus is the “Great Light”. May the light and love of Jesus be reflected in your homes and hearts this Christmas!
To all of you from Word and Spirit Ministries.
