A year’s end brings with it the pondering of life. Why are we here? What is time all about? A younger person eagerly looks forward to what lies ahead: graduation, career opportunities, relationships. A middle-aged person is hopeful things will settle down and fall into place. An older person might wonder how much time there will yet be.
Life. The challenge is to believe there is purpose to life. The challenge is to believe that life is about doing things and doing them well. The challenge is to believe that life continues.
What is life? God has told humanity that he made us to resemble him. Obviously he did not mean that physically, for we have bodies and God does not. Rather, it’s in the sense of how God is and what he does.
He is a Triune God: three persons yet one God. Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, yet one Yahweh. Three persons who are perfectly in tune with each other: who love each other and are loyal to each other.
God made humans Biune: two persons (male and female) who become one flesh. The creating of humans ends with a wedding: the ultimate human expression of love and loyalty. To love and be loyal, that’s the purpose of life.
In our loyal loving and loving loyalty we follow in the footsteps of God. We have dominion over all that God has made. We work to make it more and we rest to enjoy the fruit of our labour, just as God did. Our will is to do as God does.
Our task does not end. Thus our lives do not end. In this life we may hand on the baton. However, God has provided access to a never-ending life filled with the work of loyal loving.
As we head into 2020, we head into God’s future. Find purpose in God and seek his blessing in all you do. Go with God!
